A hedgehog visits our garden every afternoon so Mrs G won’t let me put slug pellets down in case it eats them. In consequence we have only one solitary runner bean on  a whole row of plants. 

Now, I love runner beans so this is a disaster but walking along the High Street today I spotted a whole basket full of beans on a table outside one of the cottages. There was an invitation to help myself and pop some money in a pot for the village church, so I did. 
    Fantastic!

What is even more fantastic is that a pot full of money can be left safely on the High Street untouched. This is what life should be like.

To make life even better 100 yards further and outside another house were bags of windfall apples with a notice to ‘Help Yourself’. Well, I did, so now there is apple pie afterwards.

5 ways to make sure your website is included in the Telegraph horror show.

 




As promised yesterday, here are my 5 tips on how you, too, can make a horrendous website.

 

1) Use lots of flashing colours or messy animations especially if they take hours to load so people don’t wait to see your content 

2) Include an almost impossible to use navigation system, preferably one that is either broken or gets you lost within the site itself.

3). Get so taken up with building the website you forget what it is there for. And miss out all the vital information your customers need.

4) Build a blokey website for girly beauty treatments or vice versa 

5) Make sure you forget to let Google and Yahoo know it is there so no-one sees it anyway.

There are some horrendous websites on the internet. The Daily telegraph has made a fantastic slide show of the worst ones. 

A combination of an eye-watering snowfall effect and useless link system make the ski website a must visit

The multi-coloured mess  is part of a meditation website called  Medijate – can you imagine anything less likely to make you want to meditate!

I wish I had invented these!   They're small, rubber and hoping to conquer the world.
 

Silly Bandz are colourful, elasticised, silicone wristbands that come in a variety of shapes and are worn like a regular bracelet. They can be stretched to go on to the wrist but always revert back to their original shape, be it a dinosaur or letter of the alphabet.



Their inventor American Robert Croak, went from making annual sales of a few thousand pounds in 2008 to a reported £66m within two years. 

Wow! All for a glorified elastic band.  Now that IS small business success.

Hornsea - hidden gem

We popped over to Hornsea yesterday for a walk along the beach as far as Atwick Gap. The sun was shining and for once there was a buzz to the place as children ran in and out of the waves and holiday makers strolled the prom with their ice creams and fish and chips.

 I love this place, local businesses don’t rip the tourists off and even when it rains the people are friendly. The only thing that puzzles me is that someone, somewhere missed the potential of this little seaside town. With its pretty cottages, unique town centre and attractive park (The Garth) it should still be the place to go on a day out. It even has a mere with boats to hire. Too often it misses out  to its ‘Big Sister’ Bridlington, just down the coast.

Only one thing, can anyone tell me why we saw Harbour Porpoises off Hornsea Beach when we first moved here 3 years ago and haven’t seen them since?

Home again !

What a great place Leconfield is to live. 

I have been away for a few days and as soon as I reached  the East Yorkshire lanes I knew I was home. OK, so I got stuck behind the inevitable tractor but it slowed me down to see the last of the poppies in bloom and the hedgerows full of ripening fruit – time to get the wine making gear out!

No milk for a coffee when I got home, so off to the village shop. Yes, Leconfield still has one and a Post Office too. The staff are great. When we moved here we were always popping in to ask them anything from bus times to the name of a good plumber or electrician. They were only too pleased to help and really are the heart of the community.

I took the short cut home through the ‘snicket’, past the cottage garden with abundant fruit and veg and the rescued battery hens. 

The kettle's boiled and I need that coffee. I’ll  have to write more about this fantastic village another time

time rich; cash poor

The news last night warned that the jobs market will "stall" this year as demand for workers in the public sector falls. 
According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), a third of employers expect to cut jobs in the next three months.

This isn’t good news for the service industry. Competition for customers will be fierce.

However when people are ‘time rich’, ’cash poor’ they make sure to research before spending, often on the web. The websites I build will draw customers to my clients and help keep their small business thriving.
